One of the unique examples of the 13th-century medieval Mediterranean defensive structure, the Red Tower was built by order of Alaeddin Keyqubad I, the Seljuk ruler, to protect the port, shipyard and castle of Alanya against attacks from the sea. The Red Tower has attracted the attention of numerous tourists today and in the past with its monumental view. Evliya Celebi, a 17th century traveller, stated: “There is a solid octagonal tower on the sea side of Alanya Castle, this tower can hold up to 2000 men during a siege. Rectangular limestones, evenly cut and joined together, were used on the main lower walls, as well as classic shafts and red bricks in the upper section of the tower. There are a total of fifty-six 56 crenellated windows on the facades of the Red Tower. There were also 22 hot pitch pouring areas and 6 gargoyles. With its octagonal floor plan, the Red Tower has a complex interior structure in contrast to its exterior. The Red Tower has five floors and an open terrace. The Red Tower of Alanya is therefore a popular destination for many tourists
